What types of contract are there?
What types of contract there are, permanent, definite period, project sourcing, interim, and what general provisions there are concerning probationary periods, leave arrangement, termination.
The main types of contract are:
Employment contract for an indefinite period with or without a probationary period.
- There is usually a probationary period of 6 months or possibly 12 months stipulated
- After the probationary period has expired, the employment contract is automatically converted to an indefinite period. There is usually an internal appraisal before the expiry of the probationary period.
- There are set rules regarding the termination of these contracts on the part of both the employer and the employee. These rules depend on the seniority accrued in the company. The notice period is usually shorter if the employee wants to terminate the employment contract than if the employer terminates.
Employment contract for a definite period
- The period depends on the circumstances. Often this type of contract is used to cover slightly longer absences within a company.
- This contract offers a little more guarantee of longer employment compared to an interim contract, for example; see below. In principle, this contract expires on the stated date unless, for instance, there are compelling reasons for early termination invoked.
- The contract can, but not necessarily, also provide a probationary period. This can be at least 7 days for a (Belgian) blue-collar worker, or 1 month for a (Belgian) white-collar employee, with a maximum of one third of the contract’s definite period, e.g. no more than 3 months for a contract of 9 months.
Interim contracts
- are contracts that can apply for one day or one week and therefore could be renewed on a daily or weekly basis.
- Interim contracts are handled by an interim provider, which will not only pay you an agreed wage, but will also provide for holiday pay and sickness.
Project contracts
- are contracts that run for the duration of a specific project; are often entered into within project sourcing. Project sourcing is a temporary project in which employment is provided until the completion of a specific project.
