Now that we are all sitting at home, things are changing. Work goes from home but also job applications are no longer done physically. At Select too, we all work from home and this means that our application process will be slightly modified. For instance, you will be invited for a video interview instead of a live interview. But how do you tackle such a video application?
1. Good equipment
You need a good internet connection and PC to make video calls. Test your camera and microphone. Are they not working so well? Then try plugging your smartphone earphones into your computer. Working with a laptop? Then make sure your battery is sufficiently charged. You can even do a video call with a smartphone, but put it in a stable place.
Turn off other programmes for a while and ask your housemates not to play Netflix or games for a while, so your internet connection doesn't get overloaded.
2. Cut yourself off
Inform your housemates that you have a job interview and set yourself apart for a while. Choose a neutral background. Test your camera and adjust it so that that basket of dirty laundry doesn't show and your lighting is right. Don't sit in front of a window or a big light source, but make sure a lamp or sunlight illuminates your face.
3. Test the software
There are several applications for making video calls: Zoom, Skype, Google Hangouts, Teams, Whereby. Ask in advance which application your recruiter uses and test it yourself first. You may need to update your internet browser. Of course, we at Select assist you with the start-up of such video calls.
4. Don't forget your notes
A video application is similar to a live interview. So make sure you have pen and paper ready, your CV and the vacancy. Write down the questions you have on a piece of paper and don't forget to ask them. At the office, we always offer you a coffee or glass of water, but this is not possible via video. So don't forget to prepare something to drink yourself, so you don't have to interrupt the interview to walk to the kitchen.
5. Think about your appearance
Just because you can 'only' be seen on video does not mean you should not take care of your appearance. It is not just your clothes that are important here, but also your attitude. Radiate confidence, make eye contact, smile and be interested. Maybe swapping your slouches for shoes will help?
