What do you do with gaps in your CV?
A CV is a business card, but far from all CVs are perfect. Our recruiters regularly come across a 'hole' in a CV. Do not panic! Because that does not mean that your CV immediately ends up in the wrong pile.

A gap in your CV is sometimes unavoidable. You have not worked for a period of time and so dates are missing. Still, recruiters will want to know more about this. "As a recruiter, we mainly want to get to know the candidate and check whether he or she is the right person for the job," explains Valérie François, Lead Consultant Finance at Select Zaventem. So you can almost be sure, they will also ask you about those breaks. Therefore, here are some tips!
1. Never lie!
"This is my first and most important tip," says Valérie. "Never lie!" When you lie, sooner or later the truth will come out anyway and you will still end up in tight spots. Be honest from the start.
2. Be well prepared
When you are invited for a job interview, prepare well. While doing so, don't forget to explain the breaks in your CV. "It is best to think about "your story" beforehand and practise it enough so that you can tell it in an easy way during your interview."
3. Not every break is the same
Taking a trip around the world, assisting a loved one during a period of illness, study leave or resignation, they are all different explanations for the gap in your CV. "Take the time to make a list of everything you did during this period," Valérie explains. "This will show that you have not remained inactive and you have spent your time in a structured way."
4. Make the connection with the job vacancy
You can highlight your skills and previous work experience on your CV, so that the break fades into the background. Or you can just link that gap to the job vacancy you are applying for. "Take the time to make the connection between your activities and the job or type of company you are applying for," he says.
For example, if you are applying to a charity and have volunteered during your unemployment, mention this. This will show your motivation and commitment.
5. Show your motivation and stay positive
The fact that your CV is not perfect can sometimes be difficult. But try to stay positive. "Be constructive. For example, show that you want to turn difficulties into opportunities." Even if your CV has a gap here and there, leaving a positive impression is just as important.
